Pedal Power Free Meal Deals at Hotels - Dangers to Health

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Roaring News – “A Danish hotel (Crowne Plaza Hotel, Copenhagen) is offering a free meal to any guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bike attached to a generator”… Copenhagen is voted the world’s best city for cyclists!

To produce electricity pedaling on an exercise bike attached to a generator is indeed a novel idea from Crowne Plaza Hotel, Copenhagen. Further, the hotel has also presented an innovative thought of attaching iPhone to measure the amount of electricity produced. But there is hardly any indication if the hotel is also paying any attention to the health of their guest; the situation may well turn out to be dangerous for some guests.

A guest may indulge in excess to earn that free meal which may present unseen dangers causing harm to guests’ health, e.g. a buffet meal at luxury 5 star hotels may cost a lot (around $50) per person while it may be just under $ 15 at a lesser star budget hotel with same menu. The variable amount earned through pedaling to produce electricity can be expected when staying at less expensive hotels and undertaking similar activity there (of course, in future).

Pedal-cycling can create medical conditions like cardiac pressure if one goes beyond one’s physical endurance, which is hardly visually measurable for such activities to judge if participating (paying) guest has crossed the capacity.

An appropriate device to continuously measure the heart-beat of pedal-busy-guest may also be considered attached to his/her body with an alarm of a sort. Will not the 15 minutes of pedal-cycling likely to leave the guest reasonably exhausted while in his/her pedal-drive to ‘earn’ a free meal?

Is it really a free meal? To my understanding, the guest is going to ‘earn’ it by providing pedaling service (skilled or unskilled labor???) to the hotel. The money so earned would rather add to the guest’s taxable income.

When you go to a Gym you are a service receiver and pay for using it. But when you are pedaling to produce electricity, you become a service provider and earning money which can be termed as ‘commercial activity’…a catch 22 situation! Indulging in similar activity for one’s own self may not be termed as ‘commercial activity’ elsewhere. However, different countries are government by different laws.

There was no likening danger involved when hotels started offering free meal to jobless when most nations were in the grip of severe recession in the recent past.

As the ‘pedal-power free meal’ program is still at a nascent stage, providing of health related insurance cover to the guests by hotels for any eventuality hopefully will also be made part of the guest care.
